COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
A Phillips, "Double for all her sins", ZAW 94 (1982),
130-132. - P. interprets the phrase "Double for all her sins"
(Is. 40:2) literally. Jerusalem has received double its punishment,
i.e. twice the length of time it deserved. This means that a second innocent
generation, with no responsibility for previous events, have also been punished.
However, it is their vicarious suffering which is necessary for the glorious
future promised by the prophet. (K.W.W.)
