Founded in 1978, the Jewish
Law Association is devoted to the encouragement of scholarship in Jewish
Law and the publication of that scholarship in English so that it will
be available for the study of Jewish Law. Members of the Association
come from many nations, from Israel to Argentina, from Canada and the
United States to Australia, from Western Europe to South Africa. The
membership represents diverse religious, philosophical and intellectual
perspectives, including persons who, while not Jewish themselves, are
interested in the study of Jewish law. The association hosts a biennial
conference at which members and non-members from discrete academic disciplines
present papers, examining various facets of Jewish law. Some of these
papers, often revised and enhanced as a result of a discussion at the
conference, are selected to appear as chapters in the Association's
publication series, Jewish Law Association Studies.
The Association has now held
14 biennial conferences; the 15th is scheduled for Manchester in July
2008. Fifteen volumes of Jewish Law Association Studies have been published,
including thematic volumes on Jewish Identity, Jewish Family Law in
Israel, and Jewish Bioethics. Full details of their contents, and of
future volumes, are provided on our publications page. A generous
discount offer on back volumes is currently available to paid-up members;
for details, click here. In addition,
the Association has sponsored the publication of An Introduction to
the History and Sources of Jewish Law (OUP).
Membership in the
Association brings with it, as a part of the nominal dues, one volume
(the volume assigned) for each year of membership. For the full range
of member benefits, see privileges. Members
of The Jewish Law Association may now order The Jewish Law Annual
at concessionary prices: see http://www.legaltheory.demon.co.uk/Discounts.pdf.
A full list of the contents of vols. I-XVII may be downloaded here.
