Which keyboard characters correlate to which letters..?
1. General comments about viewing articles
An article can be viewed as a PDF document and/or as a Word
document. To read PDF, you will need Adobe Acrobat, which can
be downloaded from
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html To
save/download the Word version, simply use your browser's File
menu to Save As... Some articles within Melilah contain
Hebrew. If you cannot see any Hebrew, visit the
Problems page. Please note
that to view Hebrew in the Word version (and to cut and paste
Hebrew from either the Word or PDF versions), it will be
necessary to download and install the font
SPTIBERIAN (PC version) or
SPTIBERIAN (Mac version). For
the purposes of citation, the Acrobat version should be used,
since pagination of the Word versions may differ slightly
according to the user's system configuration.
Melilah
articles are sometimes substantially longer than conventional
journal articles, and so may take a minute or two to download.
2. I am using a PC and I cannot see any Hebrew...
You should be
able to view any Hebrew within the articles if you download
the Acrobat version (.pdf). If you download the Word version
(.doc), you will need to download and install the font.
Just click on
SPTIBERIAN (PC version).
Choose 'Save to disk'. For a normal windows system, download
the font to the Windows/Fonts folder on your hard drive.
Click on Start,
Settings, Control panel, Fonts.
Click on File, Install new font.
Find the font in the folder to which you downloaded it.
Click on the file SPTIBERI.ttf to select it.
Press the OK button.
When you are
finished, click on View, Refresh/Reload in your browser. The
Hebrew should display correctly - if not, you may need to
reboot Windows.
3. I am using a Mac and I cannot see any Hebrew...
You should be
able to view any Hebrew within the articles if you download
the Acrobat version (.pdf) . If you download the Word version
(.doc), you will need to download and install the font.
Just click on
SPTIBERIAN (Mac version).
Double-click on
the Stuffit file SPTIBERIAN.sit.hqx to download it. Choose
'Save to disk'.
If you have
Stuffit Expander in your System (if not, you will need to
download it, e.g. from
www.stuffit.com/expander/macindex.html),
it should extract the file automatically as it is downloaded.
This should produce, on your desktop, a font "suitcase" (with
an icon that looks like a suitcase) named (simply) SPTiberian
(as opposed to the SPTiberian.sit.hqx and SPTiberian.sit
files, which you would also find there). If the file does not
extract automatically, double click on SPTiberian.sit, in
order to produce it. Then drag the suitcase on to your
(closed) System Folder. You should get a message recognising
the file as a font and asking if you want to install it in
your fonts folder (to which you "OK"). Then the font should
work after you reboot.
OR download
the Mac Tiberian font, expand it if necessary, and install it
in your System's Fonts Folder from:
http://www.sbl-site.org/resources/resources_biblicalfonts.aspx
When you are
finished, click on View, Refresh/Reload in your browser. The
Hebrew should display correctly - if not, you may need to
restart your Mac OS.
4. I am having problems viewing the Melilah
website, generally...
Considerable
care has been taken to ensure that Melilah can be
viewed on a variety of platforms and browsers. If, however,
you are having difficulties with any aspect of the site,
please contact us at
melilah@manchester.ac.uk and
explain what the specific problem is. Do include details
of your computer type (eg Mac/PC), operating system (eg
Windows version) and browser version (eg Internet Explorer or
Mozilla Fire Fox).
5. Which keyboard characters correlate to which letters in
the SPTIBERIAN font..?
Download the
README file (for both the PC
and Mac versions). This provides technical details as well as
the keyboard/character correlations. SPTiberian is a public
domain font available from the
Society for Biblical Studies.
