JOINT HONOURS DEGREE IN MIDDLE EASTERN LANGUAGES & COMPARATIVE RELIGION

Why read Jewish Studies?     Dept of Middle Eastern Studies

DEPT OF MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES

(For students opting for Hebrew as their Middle Eastern Language, and Jewish Studies courses as part or all of the Comparative Religion component).

NB: Jewish Studies courses can also be taken, within this degree, in combination with more general modules concerning the history and culture of the Middle East, and also with other Middle Eastern languages, and there is a wide range of other comparative religion courses, which may be taken in place of the Jewish Studies courses. For full details, see the MES Departmental booklet.

60 credits are taken each year in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies; 60 credits are taken from a choice of courses in Comparative Religion. Year 3 is normally spent abroad.

Click here for short descriptions of the individual courses which comprise the different programmes. Individual courses are reviewed year by year, and not all courses run every year. Some courses have prerequisites (see the relevant Departmental Handbook). Some are designed to alternate with others on a two year cycle (indicated by "alt", in the lists below). A number of new courses (indicated by ·) are currently going through course approval procedures. There are plans further to supplement the list, particularly in the areas of Modern Jewish History and Modern Hebrew Literature, as from 2001/2002, provided that resources permit.
