Title: 'TRANSLATING BIALIK'.

Abstract: This presentation will outline the problems and challenges of translating works of great literary merit from Hebrew into English, in this case the novellas of Bialik, together with extracts of the English translation by way of illustration. We will highlight the extraordinary evocation of childhood presented in Bialik's autobiographical novella, Random Harvest (in Hebrew Safiah).

The Speaker: Professor David Patterson is the Emeritus Founder President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and an Emeritus Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford. He was the Cowley Lecturer in Postbiblical Hebrew at Oxford University from 1956-1989, and prior to that a lecturer in modern Hebrew at Manchester University, from which he has a BA in Semitic languages with first class honours, as well as an MA and PhD. He is the author of many books and articles on modern Hebrew literature and modern Jewish history.
