Title: 'THE IMPACT OF SEPHARDI/ASHKENAZI
MARRIAGES ON JEWISH FAMILY FOOD AND CUSTOMS'.
Abstract: The session will investigate
the effect on Jewish family food culture now and in the future, of Ashkenazi/Sephardi
marriages between partners presently domiciled in the UK, but with origins
in many different Jewish communities world-wide. We will include an examination
of Sephardi and Ashkenazi cookbooks and historical texts; personal experiences
and reminiscences; interviews with both partners in this type of marriage;
data from questionnaires, interviews with Askenazi and Sephardi rabbis,
as well as with food psychologists; and Evelyn's own experience as an international
Jewish food writer concerned with researching both communities over 35 years.
The Speaker: Evelyn Rose MBE FIHEc is a
consultant home economist, food and wine writer and broadcaster. She is
a former National Chairman of the Institute of Home Economics, and has been
cookery columnist of the Jewish Chronicle for over thirty years, as well
as contributer to other national magazines and newspapers. She has been
a member of the Consumers' Committee of Great Britain and also Commissioner
on the Meat and Livestock Commission. She was, until recently, Joint Chairman
of the Guild of Food Writers. Evelyn has written numerous books on cookery,
including joint authorships with her daughter, Judi, and fellow cookery
expert, Sula Leon. She was awarded the MBE in 1989 for services to the consumer.
