Limmud Day, Sunday February
27th 2000

Title: 'THE WAY THE MISHNAH MOVES'.
Abstract: The audience is invited to join
me in taking apart and putting together again selected passages from the
Mishnah. We shall try to see how halakhic information is actually conveyed
as the text moves from one topic to the next, and how maximum information
is meant to be derived from this well-crafted and highly economical document.
Handouts with English translations of sample passages will be provided.
All welcome.
The Speaker: Dr. Samely is a lecturer in
Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Manchester. He is also a member
of the Centre for Jewish Studies. In his research and teaching Dr. Samely
deals with rabbinic literature, in particular with the structure and formal
features of Mishnaic and midrashic texts. He also tries to understand the
techniques of rabbinic interpretation of Scripture (in Midrash, and in Targum)
with the help of categories from modern linguistics. He is also interested
in modern Jewish philosophy.
