Title: 'WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND
WITH ALL YOUR SOUL'.
Abstract: This session offers an all-too-brief
chance to explore what it means in the 21st (or 58th) century to ask 1)
who are we really? 2) why is that important in our quest for religious renewal?
and 3) can Judaism provide any answers for us? In an interactive session
we will compare our own ideas with those of some classical and contemporary
thinkers within Jewish and other religious traditions, as well as within
the secular world.
The Speaker: Stan Freedman was through
and through a 'rational humanist' who, after 50 years living out a real
but cynical attachment to Judaism, decided that Judaism offered him too
much emotional challenge and satisfaction to leave its definition solely
to the 'leap of faith' believers. By getting involved in both academic and
informal Jewish study he is in the process of finding a valid form of Judaism
that does not demand the suspension of rationality and is for him therefore
a Judaism which works beyond the walls of the synagogue.
