Course Aims::

The aim of this course unit is to read selected passages from the Hebrew Bible and consider issues of textual, linguistic and exegetical interest arising from them.

 

Prerequisities:

Students will have studied TH1140 Biblical Hebrew or equivalent and normally TH2170 Hebrew Texts I or equivalent.

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will be able:

  1. to prepare their own translations of the selected passages;
  2. to comment critically on points of textual, linguistic and exegetical interest;
  3. to assess the contribution of various commentators on the selected passages.

 

Reading:

The Hebrew text used will be the Biblica Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Texts for 1998-99: Genesis 1-4; Deuteronomy 1-3 and 5: 1-10; Judges 4-5; Amos 3-5; Psalms 42-47; Ecclesiastes 1-3 and for MA only Exodus 21:1-22:16 (with Professor Bernard Jackson). Commentaries will be recommended during the course unit.

Weekly					Tuesdays 9-10, Thursdays 4-5 
							(provisional); 
							BSJ: Mondays 3-4 (fortnightly)

Taught in: 			Both Semesters

Assessment:			2 hour written examination (60%) 
							plus a translation and commentary 
							on a prescribed passage (40%)
