MA BURSARIES

1. THE LIONEL BLACK BURSARY FUND

University of Manchester

Applications are invited for Lionel Black Bursaries for the academic year 2007-2008. These bursaries are available to both new and continuing students at the University of Manchester taking the MA in Jewish Studies, the MA in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, or the MA in Holocaust Studies. One bursary will be awarded at the level of £5000, to a student of academic merit on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and six further awards of £500.00 will be made in order of acceptance of offers of places on the MA.

Candidates should submit a letter and should request two referees to write to The Centre for Jewish Studies, Religions and Theology, University of Manchester, Samuel Alexander Building, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, Fax: 0161-275 3613, e-mail: cjs@man.ac.uk. Wherever possible, these referees should be in a position to speak to both the academic merit and the personal circumstances of the applicant. The closing date for applications is 15 July. Candidates also need to submit their application forms for admission to the appropriate School Admissions Office.

2. SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FOR AN AHRB AWARD

The Centre has a number of bursaries (1 year at £1500 p.a.) available only to students applying for an AHRB award to be held at Manchester. For further information on AHRB awards, go to: www.ahrb.ac.uk.

To apply for such awards, you must apply, by 15 December, for admission for an MA in Jewish Studies (see application procedures for post-graduate studies), and include a letter to the Centre for Jewish Studies setting out your grounds for seeking such an award. The successful candidates will be informed by 1st March.

The terms of the award are that successful candidates will receive the bursaries if they have applied to the AHRB for an award but have NOT received it, AND they nevertheless enrol to study the MA in the Centre for Jewish Studies at Manchester.
