UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Why read Jewish Studies? | Individual Course Descriptions

Graduation

Courses in Jewish Studies at the University of Manchester are offered in a number of departments, particularly the Department of Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of Religions and Theology (click here for short descriptions of the individual courses):

V623 BA (Hons) Study of Religions and Theology (Jewish Studies). A degree programme which enables students to specialise in the study of Jewish religion, culture and history. The first level Core Course (40 credits) and the third level Dissertation (30 credits) and General Paper (10 credits) are compulsory as in the general degree, and the dissertation is normally focused on a topic related to the study of Jewish religion, culture and/or history. At each level 60 credits must be completed in designated course units from a list which relates directly to the study of religion and society.

T670 BA with Honours in Hebrew and Jewish Studies (in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies)

T654 BA with Honours in Hebrew (in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies)

Y300 BA (Hons) in Combined Studies (in the Department of Combined Studies): combining Jewish Studies (from one-third to two-thirds of the programme) with one of eleven other subject areas.* No language requirement.

V800 BA with Honours in the Study of Religion and Theology (in the Department of Religions & Theology): no language requirement.

T608 Hebrew may be taken as one of two languages in the BA in Middle Eastern Languages.

TT62 Hebrew may be taken as one of two languages in the BA in Middle Eastern & Modern European Languages.

As a general guide, each year of undergraduate study comprises 120 credits, and the vast majority of individual courses comprise 20 credits. It is thus possible, within each of these degrees, to choose courses in Jewish studies which fill at least a substantial majority of the credit requirements. For the full regulations, it is necessary to consult the relevant departmental handbook. For information about undergraduate life at the University of Manchester, see the general Undergraduate Courses web page.

Students on other degrees may also take Jewish Studies courses as outside subjects, to the extent permitted by their particular degree regulations. It is also possible to take individual Jewish Studies courses, with the consent of the teacher, as a "Visiting Student": for fees and further details, contact the Centre.

Click here for short descriptions of the individual courses which comprise the different programmes. Individual courses are reviewed year by year, and not all courses run every year. Some courses have prerequisites (see the relevant Departmental Handbook). Some are designed to alternate with others on a two year cycle. There are plans further to supplement the list, particularly in the areas of Modern Jewish History and Modern Hebrew Literature, as resources permit.
